Early Years Foundation Stage

The Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) includes our Nursery and Reception year groups.  In the EYFS we follow a curriculum which is especially designed to support the way young children learn.

Children develop quickly in the early years and at Five Elms we aim to do all we can to help children have the best possible start in life.

The school plans activities which reflect the three characteristics of effective teaching and learning. These are:-

  • play and exploring – children investigate, experience things and ‘have a go’
  • active learning – children concentrate and keep on trying if they encounter difficulties and enjoy achievements
  • creating and thinking critically – children have and develop their own ideas, make links between ideas and develop strategies for doing things.

Reporting to Parents

Throughout the Foundation Stage the children are monitored using the Development Matters descriptors. The ‘Foundation Stage Profile’ is a measure of children’s development at the end of the Foundation Stage in the reception class. A record is kept of each child’s development which is shared with parents.

Development Matters

'Every child is a unique child who is constantly learning and can be resilient, capable, confident and self assured'     (Development Matters in the EYFS 2012)

We know that the most effective learning and development takes place when children feel safe and secure and when adults tune into their unique interests, needs and abilities. Teachers plan experiences that motivate all the children to learn. We use the 'Development Matters Curriculum' which is based on the following:

Prime Areas:
  • Personal, Social and
  • Emotional Development
  • Communication and Language
  • Physical Development

Specific Areas:
  • Literacy
  • Mathematics
  • Understanding the World
  • Expressive Arts and Design.
